What is a The Pharmanex Biophotonic Scanner?

This scanner painlessly gives an accurate and reliable reading of an individual’s antioxidants by measuring carotenoid levels in 30 seconds by scanning the palm of a client’s hand. Carotenoids are a type of antioxidant that are primarily responsible for the reds, yellows, and oranges we see in fruits and vegetables. They are important because the non-carotenoids rely on the carotenoid antioxidants to protect and replenish the cells.

The Science

The technology is Raman Resonance Spectroscopy. “The mechanisms of action of the Raman spectroscopic analysis of dermal carotenoids involves, in terms of the specifications of the Biophotonic Scanner, a fine beam of photons, precisely calibrated at exactly 473 nm frequency, fired into the epidermis of the skin.The 473 nm wavelength photons strike carotenoid molecules in the skin, and, because of energy absorption of the alternating double bond carotenoid molecules, the photons are reflected back at 510 nm. 510 nm is a slightly longer wavelength and lower frequency.  This is the so-called “Raman shift.” The change in blue photons shot out and green photons reflected back to the Raman spectrometer is what the Pharmanex Biophotonic Scanner measures.”
